Artist Biography

Philile Sekgothe is a published poet, performance artist, care worker and music journalist. With her art and life, she seeks to express and explore the quiet power behind the healing nature of African storytelling, and the creativity and spirituality that uphold it. She is also a qualified mindfulness practitioner and facilitates workshops centred around the art of being, breath-work and cultivating presence.

Based primarily in her city of origin, Johannesburg (South Africa), Philile’s work weaves together poetry, sound and performance art. She also leads meditative sound journeys for her audiences, accompanied by her poetic incantations. The spaces that have invited Philile to offer her musical poetry performances or sound journeys include JIAS (Johannesburg Institute of Advanced Studies), Constitution Hill in partnership with Basha Uhuru, Discovery PACE Awards and PANSA PA Summit & Awards, to name a few.

Sekgothe has had four of her poems published in the anthology ‘Woven with Brown Thread’, edited by Upile Chisala, and supported by The Centre for the Less Good Idea. Philile was selected to be a mentor for the 2023 SprinNG Writing Fellowship in partnership with Botsotso - a collaboration between Nigerian, Ghanaian and South African writers.
